{"id":1450,"date":"2021-04-08T15:25:44","date_gmt":"2021-04-08T15:25:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.amberlydental.com\/blog\/?p=1450"},"modified":"2026-04-02T18:49:03","modified_gmt":"2026-04-02T18:49:03","slug":"same-day-crowns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.amberlydental.com\/blog\/2021\/04\/08\/same-day-crowns\/","title":{"rendered":"Same Day Crowns \u2013 Myths and Misinformation"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.amberlydental.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/image.png\"  class=\"wp-image-1451\" width=\"292\" height=\"160\"\/ alt=\"Dr. Tim Vacek smiling\"><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The majority of American adults have at least one dental crown making it the most common prosthetic treatment in the U.S.&nbsp; The procedure has evolved from a 2 week process into a 2 hour process.&nbsp; However, not all dentists have embraced the evolution.&nbsp; How are you to decide what type of crown is best for you? &nbsp; A Google search on \u201csame day dental crowns\u201d results in over 15&nbsp;million results displayed in 1.14 seconds.&nbsp; As a practicing dentist, I decided to see what this information says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>What I discovered was shocking.&nbsp; The top 3 results compare same day (2 hour) crowns to lab fabricated (2 week) crowns. &nbsp; All 3 have surprisingly similar information: Same day crowns are more convenient&nbsp;but are not as strong as lab crowns.&nbsp; I\u2019m here to say this simply isn\u2019t true and in my experience same day crowns are every bit as good&#8230;<em>if not better<\/em>, than 2 week crowns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In my opinion, the problem here is that these articles are using outdated information.&nbsp; The real problem is that you may make a detrimental decision based on flawed information.&nbsp; So, what are the facts and how could a 2 hour crown be better than a 2 week crown?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"252\" height=\"151\" src=\"https:\/\/www.amberlydental.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/image-1.png\"  class=\"wp-image-1452\"\/ alt=\"Dr. Tim Vacek talking to patient\"><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>As a consumer I know what it&#8217;s like to research and sift through information found on the internet. It\u2019s time consuming and seems increasingly unreliable.&nbsp; As a dentist I have extensive experience using both types of crowns. When choosing the type of dentistry you want, I\u2019d recommend starting with the <em>latest<\/em> information then use common sense then base your decision based on what feels most comfortable to you.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dental crowns can be made out of several materials. In the 1980\u2019s gold crowns were the most popular.\u00a0 Due to undesirable esthetics, labs began to veneer the gold with a white porcelain.\u00a0 In the early 2000&#8217;s a type of &#8220;all porcelain&#8221; crown began to emerge.\u00a0 This material was beautiful but admittedly, not strong and often fractured. Important to note, this porcelain was also the first material used for \u201csame day\u201d crowns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"340\" height=\"220\" src=\"https:\/\/www.amberlydental.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/image-2.png\"  class=\"wp-image-1453\"\/ alt=\"Dr. Tim Vacek treating his patient\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.amberlydental.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/image-2.png 340w, https:\/\/www.amberlydental.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/image-2-300x194.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 340px) 100vw, 340px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In the last 2 decades dental technology has advanced dramatically.&nbsp; For starters, the original porcelain is rarely used.&nbsp; More popular than both gold and porcelain fused to metal, is now a material called zirconia.&nbsp; Furthermore, there are multiple types of zirconia along with several new porcelain materials with various strength and esthetic qualities.&nbsp; The bottom line is dental materials are evolving and same day crown technology is evolving with them.&nbsp; We have the ability to make all the most popular crowns including zirconia, all ceramic, lithium disilicate, composite, and hybrids of each.
