How can your dentist treat it?\nContinue reading below to find out. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Are the Causes of Sensitive Teeth?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Sensitive teeth may be caused by a number of factors, such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Cavities <\/li><li>Exposed tooth root due to receding gumline <\/li><li>Chipped or cracked teeth <\/li><li>Gum disease <\/li><li>Worn fillings <\/li><li>Eroded tooth enamel <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Enamel is the outermost layer of your teeth. It\u2019s made of a\nhard material that protects the underlying layer, called the dentin. Dentin\ncontains microscopic tubules that lead to the nerves of the tooth. Since enamel\nis not technically made of organic matter, it cannot be regenerated. Once it\u2019s\nworn away, the dentin becomes exposed, resulting in sensitivity to extreme\ntemperatures as well as to sweet and acidic foods and drinks. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Can Sensitive Teeth Be Treated?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Because tooth sensitivity is such a common problem, modern\ndentistry has come a long way in addressing this issue. There are multiple ways\nthat your dentist can treat sensitive teeth, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Toothpaste for sensitive teeth. <\/strong>This\nspecial kind of toothpaste contains compounds that prevent transmission of\nsensations from the surface of the tooth to the nerve. It may take a few\napplications before it really starts to work. <\/li><li><strong>Fluoride treatment. <\/strong>Your dentist can\napply a fluoride gel in-office, or prescribe a gel to be used at home. Fluoride\nis a naturally occurring mineral that strengthens the tooth enamel, so it does\na better job at protecting the dentin. <\/li><li><strong>Crown. <\/strong>If your sensitivity is the result\nof decay, a crown may be placed over the tooth to correct the issue. <\/li><li><strong>Gum graft.<\/strong> If your gumline is receding\nand your tooth root is exposed, a surgical gum graft will protect the root. <\/li><li><strong>Root canal.<\/strong> If your sensitivity is severe\nand persists even after the above methods have been used, your dentist may\nremove the pulp and nerve from the tooth to alleviate your discomfort. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Sensitive teeth are fairly common, so your dentist can\ndecide which method of treatment is best for you.
